Culling its influences from the Spielberg school of science-fiction more than anything else, Jeff Nichols' thematically powerful ode to fatherhood among other things moves with a modesty that belies its ambition, breathing strong affection into nearly every sinew and bone it possesses.

Slept on as the lesser of the director's two 2016 efforts - he also helmed civil rights biopic Loving - it reunited him with his Take Shelter leading man Michael Shannon, who grounds this effective chase film with a heart, soul and characteristic conflict. It deserves reappreciation already.
