Rapper-turned-filmmaker Boots Riley's debut feature is arguably more of a dark comedy tinged with sci-fi touches than an out-and-out genre entry - but it's hard to deny that the twists in an Oakland a step out of time with the real thing are a work of sublime fever-dream satire.

Initially following the trajectory of Lakeith Stanfield's down-on-his-luck everyman who discovers his calling as a telemarketer by using his "white voice", it veers around as a heightened critique of capitalist culture with an often fiery touch - but its sharp impressions leave their mark.
