Aside from the Joker, Darth Vader is pretty much unrivalled for the title of the greatest screen villain of all time. He is the walking embodiment of the Dark Side, an evil, malignant force hell-bent on the destruction of all that is good and right in the galaxy, who has few qualms killing youngsters or innocents in his path.

Yes, he is forced to be the puppet of the Emperor, but he still manages to transcend his master in the villainy stakes during the first three movies, and by rights it should have taken someone of incredible power and moral integrity to defeat him. But instead, a simple farm boy with some aptitude for fixing gay robots somehow manages to stumble through battles with the Sith Lord to ultimate victory, despite the fact that he basically spends the rest of the trilogy having his life saved by other people.

Without Han, Luke would be dead; without Ben Kenobi, Luke would be dead; without Lando, Luke would be dead... and yet, the good-natured moron with the magic powers prevails over the all-powerful evil juggernaut.
