The Hero: Rocky

Rocky is a great film: it is the ultimate expression of the underdog taking his last chance and proving himself not to be a loser in life despite losing in the ring. Balboa is the posterboy for the underachieving, no-hoper, who emerges with his dignity intact and a girl in tow, because he sticks to his convictions and gives the champ a real fight.

And the fact that he lost was very important, because it underlined the inherent tragedy in his life and offered a distinct counter-point to his successful relationship with Adrien. But then Hollywood went all Hollywood, and suddenly this no-hope, no-skill punk with all the boxing finesse of a considerably less able Audley Harrison, and a wayward haymaker that wouldn't have made a dent in warm butter suddenly became the Greatest Fighter In The World Ever.

Every single one of his opponents can count themselves aggrieved, particularly if they were knocked out, because Rocky was a terrible, terrible boxer - which was always sort of the point of the original. Ivan Drago was a refined boxing machine, Clubber Lang an unrestrained animal and Apollo Creed the Nation's Favourite champ, and yet all of them were somehow out-boxed by a chancer from the backstreets.
