In the Star Wars universe, there are many big moments of sacrifice and redemption and they all began with Obi-Wan Kenobi.

In the beginning of A New Hope, Obi-Wan and Luke become mentor and apprentice quickly, and Luke having lost his family on Tatooine, he depends solely on Obi-Wan and is determined not to lose anyone else. The fact that Obi-Wan therefore chooses to die to ensure Luke does not waste time trying to rescue him shows how far he’ll go to make sure Luke escapes to safety. Even though he warns Vader that in killing him “I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine”, Vader does it anyway. This does make it possible for Obi-Wan to continue helping Luke with the Force, free from the physical body.

The shocking impact of this whole scene comes from seeing Luke’s pained reaction to his friend dying, but also knowing that Obi-Wan gave his life for the greater good without fear of hesitation. He knew it was the right thing to do and willingly let Vader kill him.

Through his actions, Luke was able to go forward and bring balance to the Force, and be the guiding inspiration that Luke needed to defeat the Empire.
