12 Saturn Award-Winning Performances Of The 2010s That Should've Been Oscar-Nominated

2. Robert Downey Jr - Avengers: Endgame

Patrick Stewart Logan
Marvel Studios

Much like Patrick Stewart before him in Logan, the Iron Man actor's final - or at the very least, chronologically cumulative - performance as Tony Stark burrowed deep to deliver a turn literally years in the making, trading off the emotional connections forged throughout almost a dozen prior appearances in the role.

Amid a three-hour film crammed with call-backs, pay-offs and emotional catharsis , Downey Jr renders the character with the sort of nuance only seen in his other career-best turns. He declined to campaign on the Oscar trail despite public support, and with Joker freezing out the comic-book niche come awards season, Endgame enjoyed little success with the Academy despite its stronger reviews.

Time may prove to be a kinder judge though - this is a genre performance for the ages.

Something of a culture vulture, Mr Steel can historically be found in three places; the local cinema, the local stadium or the local chip shop. He is an avowed fan of franchise films, amateur cricket and power-chords.
