12 Saturn Award-Winning Performances Of The 2010s That Should've Been Oscar-Nominated

11. Rene Russo - Nightcrawler

There's plenty to champion about Dan Gilroy's dark directorial debut that follows an insidious petty thief as he works his way through Los Angeles nightlife as a "stringer" - a freelance journalist - chasing after ratings in increasingly disturbing ways, but the performances are what still stand out about it all these years later, with Russo's supporting turn arguably the most shaded of the lot.

Though lead Jake Gyllenhaal often steals the spotlight with his occasionally mugging performance, a beat off from the rest of the film, it's his co-star who brings more satisfying weight to her role as she finds herself increasingly caught up in the machinations of a damaged individual looking for his next big score; a woman trying to fiercely mark her independence who finds herself under the thrall of an apparent sociopath.

It's a tough performance to watch - but a brilliant one all the same that went unfairly snubbed.

Something of a culture vulture, Mr Steel can historically be found in three places; the local cinema, the local stadium or the local chip shop. He is an avowed fan of franchise films, amateur cricket and power-chords.
