12 Saturn Award-Winning Performances Of The 2010s That Should've Been Oscar-Nominated

10. Michael Shannon - Take Shelter

Patrick Stewart Logan
Sony Pictures Classics

One of those critically acclaimed films that looked, on the surface, like non-blockbuster catnip to the Academy, Jeff Nichols' psychological thriller went absolutely AWOL when it came to nomination day, despite rave notices pretty much across the board, many of them focused on Michael Shannon's lead performance.

The Saturn Awards didn't forget him however and it's easy to see why they wouldn't have too - the actor's portrayal of a family man coming apart at the seams with visions of an impending apocalypse is among his very best, burrowing deep into the psyche of tortured masculinity to often disquieting results.

If the film itself had some detractors for its particularly measured pace and last-act gambles, there's still no doubting Shannon, who represents a tempest at the heart of everyday life, threatening to suck the whole endeavour into his orbit.
