12 Scariest Movie Moments Of 2016

9. The Opening Scene - Lights Out

The Shallows Shark
New Line Cinema

Lights Out was a nice horror treat for fans in 2016, thanks to effective scenes of tension, a creative monster and strong performances. The film was based on an acclaimed short by David Sandberg, where a woman is menaced by a monster who’s allergic to light.

It was a terrifying couple of minutes, and the opening is a more elaborate take on it, where it stalks the owner of a warehouse late at night. Sandberg makes the most of the eerie locale, carefully setting up the geography before unleashing the monster. This opening is also able to establish the rules for the monster without having to spell things out.

Lights Out didn’t really top this opening sadly, but it was still an effective chiller in its own right.
