12 Scariest Movie Moments Of 2017
5. The Moonlight Man - Gerald's Game
Even though the peculiar Moonlight Man subplot didn't gel all that easily with the main premise of Netflix's recent Stephen King adaptation, that didn't stop it being incredibly unsettling.
Jessie (Carla Gugino) is left handcuffed to her bed when a sex game with her husband (Bruce Greenwood) goes awry after he drops dead, and she ends up hallucinating a tall, deformed figure known as "the man made of moonlight".
The man makes several appearances throughout Jessie's ordeal, even appearing in the backseat of her car when she finally manages to get free from the cuffs and drive away.
After she finally recovers, Jessie continues to see the man, and eventually learns that he's not a hallucination at all, but in fact a serial killer with a severe facial deformity. On the day that the killer is to be sentenced in court, Jessie shows up to confront him, telling him, "You're so much smaller than I remember", before walking away, seemingly finally able to move on with the rest of her life.
It's bizarre, surreal and extremely disturbing, even if it doesn't necessarily make all that much sense and was very clearly co-authored by cocaine.
