1. Graboids - Tremors
Without a doubt the most famous (or, perhaps, infamous) subterranean horror movie creatures are the Graboids from the Tremors movies. Working as handymen in Perfection, Nevada, Valentine "Val" McKee (Kevin Bacon) and Earl Basset (Fred Ward) are part of an ex-mining community that contains on fourteen residents. Bored of life, the pair decide to leave for the next town - Bixby. Before they are out of Perfection's perimeter, they encounter a dead workman grabbing on to a high beam. The man has died from dehydration, having seemingly been afraid to go back down onto terra firma. Meanwhile, sheep are being attacked and the severed head of a farmer is found. Finding that the town's phones are not working (due to the creatures damaging the lines underground), Val and Earl realise they are trapped in town with the remaining residents as an unseen killer lurks around somewhere. They find a snake like creature (or so they think) attached to their truck and believe it to be the culprit. However, it turns out that the 'snake' was actually merely a tongue belonging to a much larger creature dwelling under Perfection's surface - a Graboid. Having manage to kill the first one, they discover that there are three more Graboids in the area. Realising that the creatures have very acute hearing and can sense vibrations but cannot burrow through rock, they embark on a mission to kill them. They are ultimately successful, but at the cost of several more lives as the creatures regularly emerge through the earth's surface to feast. Which other subterranean terrors can you think of?
