12 Scariest Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time
11. Event Horizon
Come on—we said the prerequisites were coming first, so while there may be some more surprising titles cropping up later in this long list, of course we needed to throw Resident Evil director Paul W.S Anderson’s best film on here.
Another, far more literal take on Ridley Scott’s “haunted house
in space” pitch, this slow burn space isolation chiller sees a sparse crew led
by Sam Neill’s grieving widower encounter the titular spaceship only to discover
that something is deeply off about it.
We gradually realise that said something is an unseen eldritch terror which drives the ship’s inhabitants, former and present, violently insane, resulting in some tense set pieces and eventually culminating in a terrifying, gory vision of a hellish alternate dimension. Anderson may have made a mess of the later Alien Vs Predator, but this one more than proves he can handle space-based terror exceptionally well and earned its spot amongst sci-fi's scariest offerings.
