12 Scariest Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time

10. The Thing

Beyond The Black Rainbow
Universal Pictures

Okay, last of the usual suspects, we promise—A remake of the classic but undeniably corny fifties Howards Hawks-produced sci-fi The Thing From Another World, this bleak and sparse tale of paranoia and parasites in a barely populated Antarctic base may be an obvious choice, but that’s only because the 1982 body horror masterpiece is still one of cinema’s most disturbing fusions of horror and sci-fi.

Not every flick featured here relies on aliens and contorting, torn up human forms for their nightmarish sci-fi imaginings, but few films can offer an image of extraterrestrial invasion more vomit-and-paranoia-inducing than this gruesome effort from the Halloween helmer, and it’s largely down to the extraordinary practical effects work from enfant terrible Rob Bottin, who offers up some of his best creations despite being only twenty three at the time of filming and eventually being hospitalized for exhaustion from the intense hours he put into this film’s painfully convincing horrors.

Worth it, Rob. Thanks for the therapy sessions.
