9. A Scanner Darkly
A dark and disturbing psychedelic trip inside the paranoid mind of Philip K Dick, 2006’s Richard Linklater directed effort A Scanner Darkly could not be further from the glossy spectacle of Alien director Ridley Scott’s earlier adaptation of the cult author’s work, 1982’s seminal cyberpunk flick Blade Runner.
That said, it’s also nothing like Linklater’s earlier School of Rock.
Starring Keanu Reeves and Robert Downey Junior, this druggy drama is viewed through the, er, compromised eyes of an undercover addict in the near future whose use of experimental psychotropics makes what’s real and what’s imaginary almost impossible to decipher as allegiances shift and tragedy strikes in this sparse dystopia.
