2. Dreamcatcher - Duddits Wasn't Always An Alien
It’s another Stephen King adaptation, since directors seem unable to stick to the Carrie author’s original endings when adapting any of his many smash hit novels. To be fair, every filmmaker wants to be the next Kubrick, and the Dr Strangelove helmer certainly set the trend when he rewrote the entire last act of The Shining.
That said, very few directors are the next Kubrick, as 2003’s Dreamcatcher proves. The central mystery of the original strange, slow-moving novel eventually reveals itself to be a conflict between an evil alien and a psychic human, and the book’s denouement sees the pair face off once and for all.
However, when it came time to adapt this scene, director Lawrence Kasdan opted to transform the very human psychic into a shapeless alien blob, a move which infuriated fans of the less surreal, easier to follow original conclusion.
