In a rare reversal of the norm, the ending to this 2004 action-oriented zombie horror remake was revised to make it more depressing.

Where the original 1978 film had its brutally bleak group suicide coda cut in favour of a more optimistic “all the heroes make it out alive” ending, the Zack Snyder-helmed remake originally ended on the image of the film’s few survivors safely aboard a vessel and making their way to a remote island free from the dangerous disease turning the world’s human population into ravenous flesh eaters.

Or at least, so they think.

See, the producers decided there was too much hope in this already pretty bleak ending, and insisted that Snyder add a choppy montage midway through the credits which serves to eliminate any doubt as to whether the film’s cast survived once they arrived ashore.
