It feels like an age since Robert Rodriguez was first linked to directing the remake of Escape From New York and while he's no longer attached, the project has begun to kick into gear.

The original has developed almost untouchable status (unless we're talking about Luc Besson's Lockout, which didn't just touch it, it ripped it off to such a degree that John Carpenter won a plagiarism case against it). Presumably, Carpenter is happier with the idea of someone actually remaking his original, since it's been talked about for a long time.

Recently, Leigh Whannell has been reported as the new screenwriter of this new take on the story of Snake Plissken and his 24-hour quest to save the President from murderous prisoners in New York's dystopian prison city. The door is apparently open for Whannell to direct as well and the suggestion is that he will retain elements of the original while bringing in some new ideas. Carpenter will return as executive producer, meanwhile, but Kurt Russell probably won't be involved, since he's publicly decried the film's lack of respect for the sanctity of the original.
