12 Sci-Fi Movies Plagued By Reshoots

One of the biggest movie flops of all time, John Carter was decades in the making but the wait was certainly not worth it.

The adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic series of novels had been passed around from studio to studio and from director to director, including Robert Rodriguez and Jon Favreau, before Disney and Andrew Stanton finally got the cameras rolling.

Pixar alumni Stanton, had never directed a live-action film before and his inexperience was on full display during production, as he later admitted that he had to reshoot the entire movie a second time.

The result was a hugely expensive film which had some great visuals and a decent soundtrack but was devoid of any kind of quality when it came to characterisation, editing, pacing, story, acting and all the other aspects that make a film watchable.

To top it all off, a poor marketing campaign (influenced by Stanton himself) alienated potential audiences from the picture and as a result it crashed and burned at the box office.

In fairness, attempting to adapt a story about an American Civil War soldier fighting on Mars was never going to be easy, but John Carter was such a critical and commercial failure that filmmakers have been scared off from ever trying to do so again.
