Background: After the success of their second feature film, Help!, John Lennon set his sights on The Fab Four starring in a live-action adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein's fantasy epic. His choice of director - none other than the acclaimed Stanley Kubrick.

The film was set to feature Paul McCartney as Frodo Baggins, Ringo Starr as Samwise Gamgee, George Harrison as Gandalf and, of course, Lennon as Gollum.

Why It Didn't Happen: Stanley Kubrick was the first to turn the band down as he thought the project would be too complex to film and instead focused on his efforts on 2001: A Space Odyssey. This was soon followed by Tolkein, who at the time still held the story's film rights, declining his permission for the band to go ahead with the venture.

Will It Ever Happen? Absolutely not, for a number of reasons that probably don't need to be explained.
