Background: Following on from 1984's Temple of Doom, a rush to create the third instalment of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's iconic film series almost resulted in a 'nuke the fridge' level mis-step.

Written by Lucas and Chris Columbus, the film looked set to embrace more supernatural elements than its predecessor with Indy facing off against haunted suits of armour, pirates and combat-trained monkeys in a search for a fruit that could grant eternal life.

Why It Didn't Happen: Thankfully, Spielberg was unenthusiastic about the script's supernatural aspects and decided that many of the envisaged scenes would be too impractical to film. The script would later go through Empire of the Sun's writer Menno Meyjes and The Lost Boy's writer Jeffrey Boam before ending up as The Last Crusade.

Will It Ever Happen? Hopefully not. Although the constantly rumoured Indiana Jones 5 is almost a certainty at this point, given the backlash that the supernatural elements in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull received, it is very unlikely that the script will be revived anytime soon.
