12 Shelved Movies That Would've Been INSANE
4. Halo
Background: A rumoured live-action adaptation of Microsoft's flagship video game series has been touted since 2005 when Microsoft announced it had signed Sunshine's Alex Garland to pen the film. At the same time they also announced Peter Jackson and his wife Fran Walsh to executive produce the project with Guillermo del Toro slated to direct.
Why It Didn't Happen: Following extensive disagreements between Microsoft, Universal and Fox over creative control of the project, del Toro abandoned the project to focus on Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
The directing mantle was then picked up by District 9's Neil Blomkamp who clashed with producers over his desire for a darker and grittier aesthetic. Ultimately, in September 2006, Fox ended up pulling their financial backing from the film causing the project to come to an untimely end.
Will It Ever Happen? Probably, but it'll be unrecognisable. Given the enormous success of the franchise, and its countless spin-offs, it is hard to imagine a live-action film not being made eventually.
However, given Blomkamp's public refusal to work with Fox ever again, as a direct result of this debacle, Garland's script may unfortunately not be the version that ends up on the big screen.
