5. David Cronenberg's Frankenstein

Background: The master of body-horror meets the original science-fiction horror novel. Following his work on remaking the classic 1950's short story The Fly, Cronenberg was approached by Canadian producer Pierre David to remake Mary Shelley's iconic novel. Cronenberg cautiously agreed and David almost immediately took out a double page advert in Variety touting the film's upcoming production.

Why It Didn't Happen: Unfortunately, despite the seemingly perfect fit of director with story, the idea didn't get much further than the advert. Although Cronenberg did talk about the project in interviews for his Cronenberg on Cronenberg collection, stating that “It would be more a rethinking than a remake", it seemingly disappeared into nothing.

Will It Ever Happen? Probably not, but hopefully. A Cronenbergian imagining of Frankenstein would of course be an incredible prospect for all science-fiction fans. However, Cronenberg's recent filmography suggests has moved on from his horror origins and, in addition, he hasn't directed a feature film since 2014's Maps to the Stars.
