12 Startling Moments In Cinema

10. Harry Kills Super Angel - Supervixens (1975)

Clint Ramsey is a humble man who works at a garage. He has a nymphomaniac wife called Super Angel who is always badgering him at work, because although he is a simple guy, he seems to be a magnet for every hot blooded sexed up female with gigantic boobs. Super Angel invites policeman Harry into her trailer and they try to have sex but Harry cannot get it up. Outraged at this insult against her 'beautiful body', Super Angel screams abuse at Harry and pours scotch all over him. The final straw, he turns round and smacks her right in the belly. Super Angel hides in the bathroom and tearfully pleads for Harry to go away or she will call the cops. Harry sneers 'You got all the police you're ever gonna need gal' and tries to bust the door down. When he is unsuccessful in his first attempts, Super Angel reverts back to bitch mode and ridicules Harry. She even puts on the radio and does a sexy dance whilst Harry's attempts to break down the door become more frantic. Eventually the door is kicked down, Super Angel is thrown into the bath and gets punched and stomped on by Harry in a moment of Ultra violence. To finish her off, Harry chucks the radio in the bath and she convulses to her death (and the trailer burns down). This scene is the most startling cinematic moment that ever came from 'King Leer' - Russ Meyer (although the scene in Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! In which Tura Satana kills a man with her bare hands comes a close second). The scene described above does not sit well with the rest of the film which is essentially a sexploitation farcical comedy. It is startling in its sheer brutality. Charles Napier (Harry) is a fantastic bad guy actor and Super Angel is a sex crazed harridan with an evil tongue. It is bewitching viewing, you cannot take your eyes off the horrible mayhem. James Ferman, former director of the BBFC, used to utilise the footage above at conferences etc. to show the necessity of film censorship.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
