12 Superhero Movie Romances That Actually Didn't Suck

12. Mr. Incredible & Elastigirl (The Incredibles)

The love story between Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) and Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) - that is, Bob and Helen Parr - isn't just a great superhero romance, but differentiates itself from almost every single other entry on this list by depicting a long-married couple.

While it lacks the sizzling, hormonal frisson of some superhero romances, it's nevertheless an endearing, startlingly authentic depiction of the comforts that a loving marriage provides.

It also refuses to ignore the toils, such as Helen suspecting Bob of infidelity, and the chaos that raising a family - super-powered or not - naturally invites.

Across the two movies, this is all juxtaposed beautifully with the less-grounded world-saving shenanigans, while Incredibles 2 introduces a cute new wrinkle by making Bob the stay-at-home dad while Helen is off trying to restore their heroic reputation.

It's a fun inversion of the too-common passive girlfriend/wife role in superhero films, and underlines a subversive, singular superhero romance.

Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes). General video game, TV and film nut. Occasional sports fan. Full time loon.
