12 Superhero Movie Romances That Actually Didn't Suck
6. Scott Pilgrim & Ramona Flowers (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World)
You can argue all day about how Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) and Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) are far more obnoxious than this movie ever wants to admit, but their twisted relationship is nevertheless written with a good deal of depth and moral ambiguity.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is focused on romance more than just about any other superhero film in existence, what with Scott having to battle through Ramona's seven evil exes in order to date her.
The novelty of Edgar Wright's approach to the superhero courtship ritual speaks for itself, to say nothing of Scott's thorny pre-existing relationship with Knives Chau (Ellen Wong).
It's fair to say that the film papers over the cheating issue a little and probably lets Scott off the hook a tad too easily, but it does at least show him growing from the beginning of the film to the end of it. He picks up the Power of Self-Respect, after all.
More than anything this doesn't feel like a love story arbitrarily tacked onto a superhero movie for the sake of it. The love story is integral to everything else, and true to form, Wright renders it with singularly stunning style.
