12 Things Disney Want You To Forget About Star Wars

1. They Don't Own Any Of The Original Movies

The best question to ask at a Star Wars junket is "Who shot first?" Firstly because Harrison Ford's totally dismissive "I don't care," is the best interview moment from the past year (Sad Affleck aside), but secondly because it serves as a fascinating look into the ethos behind Star Wars from those involved; everyone says Han.

It's from cast members, sure, but that seems to reflect the thinking of Disney that all of George Lucas' fiddling for the Special Editions isn't the "true" version of Star Wars. So, if they're keen to dismiss them, then where are our untampered versions of the original films? Why isn't this entry about them wanting us to forget the Special Edition changes?

Well, this is where it gets a little complicated. George Lucas' original deal with Fox in the 70s gave him the merchandise and sequels, but the studio had the distribution rights, meaning that while the sale of Lucasfilm in 2012 included all the assets and trademarks relating to the film, Disney can't sell the film itself. In fact, Fox still owns the distribution rights to all six of the original movies; their options on Episodes I-III and V and VI don't run out until May 2020. The story is even worse for the original film: they have that in perpetuity.

That's right - Disney paid $4.05 billion for Star Wars, but will never own the movie called Star Wars.
