12 Things You Didn't Know About The Evil Dead Movies
11. Army Of Darkness Was Very Different In Japan
The third Evil Dead film took the franchise in a completely different direction, pushing the comedy angle even further and switching things up from claustrophobic, nightmarish horror film to cheesy, part-historical fantasy action flick. But Army Of Darkness also had the biggest budget and marketing push, with the film getting released around the world.
One of the new markets opened up by the clout of Universal Pictures and Dino De Laurentiis Communications distributing the film was Japan. Now, the film industry and culture in general of Japan is slightly different from the blue collar American mileu of Ash, who's seen working in a supermarket during the film's final scene.
Apparently much more fond of those last five minutes than the preceding eighty, the Japanese marketing for the film leaned heavily on the supermarket setting, complete with cans of (Bruce) Campbell's Soup included on the poster, and the film was rechristened: if you want Army Of Darkness in Japan, you've got to ask for Captain Supermarket.
