12 Things You Learn Rewatching Tomorrow Never Dies
6. Elliot Carver Is A Deliciously Entertaining Villain
Though Elliot Carver certainly doesn't rank among the Bond series' most iconic and celebrated baddies, he is a ton of surprising fun, thanks to the not-remotely-subtle satirical nature of his character, his utterly bonkers scheme and Jonathan Pryce's appropriately unhinged performance.
This is a man with a God complex who decides to pit countries against one another simply so he can shift some more papers. Pryce's campy performance leans into the Murdoch comparisons while also being a pure ton of bats*** fun.
The moment where Carver performs a series of mocking martial arts moves in front of Yeoh is the moment where any remaining pretence of Carver being a "serious" villain was completely dropped, and it's just as well. A lesser actor would've tried to play it all straight, and the film would've been a lot less enjoyable as a result.
If all that's not enough, Carver also gets a suitably brutal death for his sins, being ripped to pieces by his own sea drill. Lovely.
