Who Actually Won?Forrest Whitaker for The Last King Of Scotland Forrest Whitaker maybe deserved the Oscar for his portrayal of Idi Amin, but the inherent gravitas of the role itself also played a big part in the win - it's Oscar bait, and the Academy fell hook, line and sinker. Will Smith, on the other hand, turned in a performance which was unequivocally masterful as the down-on-his-luck single father struggling to keep a roof over his head. All you need do is watch the scene where he takes shelter in a subway bathroom for the night with his son, blocking the door as staff try to get him to leave, cradling his son, tears rolling down his cheeks. He's one of those actors where every role he performs is at worst entertaining, and at best, proof that he is one of the best actors of his generation. People tend to lose sight of that, but they'd remember a damn sight better if he got the Oscar he deserved.
