12 Toughest Cinematic Mothers

12. Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves - Fanny (Soo Drouet)

Whilst Kevin Reynolds' 1991 Hollywood take on England's legendary folk hero may have taken its share of mythological, historical and geographical liberties, one thing the film makes abundantly clear is that life as an outlaw in Sherwood Forest couldn't have been what you'd call idyllic. Battling the elements, struggling to get enough to eat, fighting off the Sheriff's men: all rough stuff that surely takes it toll. So how much rougher must it be for a woman with eight children to look after, one of which is still newborn? Quite apart from having a name that makes British audiences laugh for reasons Americans might not understand, Fanny is one tough mother indeed. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves sees her give birth to her eighth baby, enduring a C-section without any sort of anesthetic in a dingy woodland hut. Soon thereafter she carries her baby to safety as their treetop village burns (though she does suffer the indignity of being rescued by Kevin Costner's Robin), then she joins the menfolk of Sherwood Forest in their assault on Nottingham Castle, where her elder son Wulf faces execution.
