7. Piranha 3D - Sheriff Julie Forester (Elisabeth Shue)

She might have famously declared, "don't f*** with the babysitter!" in her early hit Adventures in Babysitting, but Elisabeth Shue isn't typically cast in roles that hinge on toughness. However, Alexandre Aja's deliriously over-the-top semi-remake of the Joe Dante killer fish movie sees her in one of her most badass roles (and visibly buffer than usual), as the sheriff whose lake town is besieged by ravenous, prehistoric piranha during a particularly rowdy Spring Break. There's a personal edge for Shue's sheriff as her own children - teenager Steven R McQueen, plus pre-teens Brooklynn Proulx and Sage Ryan - happen to be out on the lake when the fish attack. As gore flies left and right, Shue shoots, speed-boats and jet-skis her way through the piranha to get to her young 'uns. And we strongly suspect the eldest was in a world of trouble afterwards.
