12 Trippy Freak Out Film Scenes That Will Melt Your Mind
3. Enter The Void
Gaspar Noé has described his 2009 drug-fuelled fantasy as a "psychedelic melodrama", and it doesn't take long for us to see why. Within minutes we follow our drug dealer protagonist, Oscar (Nathaniel Brown) from his balcony -where he stands transfixed by the neon skyline- into his apartment, where he spaces out on the hallucinogenic drug DMT. As the entire film is seen from the eyes of Oscar (even the occasional split-second of darkness to denote blinking) we are witness to the drug's spectacular effects.
Few films have pulled the viewer so deeply into the psychedelic 'experience'; dragging us further and further down a kaleidoscopic tunnel. The sequence, lasting over five minutes, bears the unmistakable influence of Noé's favourite film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. As with Kubrick's classic, such visual fireworks are the stuff of dreams. Here the colours appear to be blossoming, breathing almost, as though we're peering down at them through a microscope. You really could watch this all day. This reverie is rudely interrupted, however, by the sound of a ringing telephone, and Oscar- and the film- never quite reach the same heights again.
