12 Ultimate Movie Throwdowns

1. Oh Dae-Sue Vs. Guards - Oldboy

My nominee for greatest fight scene of all times lands at the top of our list. Chan-wook Park's classic film Oldboy weaves a tragic tale about the terrible cost of revenge. A womanizing drunk, Oh Dae-Su, wakes one day to find himself imprisoned in what appears to be a hotel room. Dae-su's captivity lasts for fifteen years during which he teaches himself how to box from watching matches on the t.v. One all consuming desire keeps Dae-Su alive: revenge. For reasons unknown, Dae-Su's captors unexpectedly release him. Dae-Su returns to his prison packing a claw hammer and his thirst for vengeance. Dae-Su literally and figuratively hammers his way through a corridor packed with guards; in one uninterrupted, 3 minute long take Park films Dae-Su cracking jaws and ribs in the style of the side-scrolling video games from the era of Super Nintendo. Despite being stomped, stabbed and staggered Dae-Su wins the day leaving a wake of mangled guards strewn over the corridor in what must count as the most epic fight ever put to film. We love our Ultimate Throwdowns so let me know in the comments what rows would have made your list.
