12 Unexpected Movie Sequels You Didn't Know Are Happening

11. Legally Blonde 3

Why It's Unexpected

Though both of the Reese Witherspoon-starring Legally Blonde movies were healthy commercial successes, the second film was released all the way back in 2003.

And since then, the brand has been diluted with a 2009 straight-to-video spin-off, Legally Blondes, implying that Witherspoon was effectively done with the unlikely franchise.

What We Know

Rumours began swirling last summer that Witherspoon was in talks to reprise the iconic role for a third film, and MGM confirmed back in January that Legally Blonde 3 was definitely happening, with a May 8, 2020 release date pencilled in.

With no director yet hired, it's likely that this release date will slip - unless shooting starts within the next month or two - but with the original film's writers Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith set to return alongside Witherspoon, this just might be a rare belated sequel that works.

2001's Legally Blonde has aged surprisingly well thanks to its surprisingly sharp examination of workplace sexual harassment and female empowerment, and if Lutz and Smith can update the formula for the era of #MeToo, it's easy to see how Legally Blonde 3 could be more than just another nostalgia-fuelled sequel.

In the very least, we know that Witherspoon's going to kill it in the lead role of Elle Woods.
