Why It's Unexpected

The Hugh Jackman-starring musical biopic of P.T. Barnum really felt like it said everything it wanted to say about Barnum's life and times - that is, not very much at all - which combined with extremely mixed reviews and controversy surrounding its historical inaccuracy, made a sequel seem most unlikely indeed.

What We Know

Back in February, original director Michael Gracey confirmed that The Greatest Showman 2 was in development, implying that the Grammy-winning film's impressive $435 million worldwide box office - against an $84 million budget - ignited Fox's interest in a follow-up.

Jackman is of course expected to return, though it remains to be seen exactly what the sequel will focus on. Barnum ventured into politics later in life, though it's extremely probable that the sequel will continue to fudge the facts and focus on being a frothy circus-centric musical instead.

This could very well end up a sequel that fails to strike the same chord as its predecessor, but at least you know Jackman and co. are going to give it their all.
