12 Unexpected Movie Sequels You Didn't Know Are Happening
5. Backdraft II
Why It's Unexpected
If a sequel to Ron Howard's red-hot 1991 dramatic thriller was ever going to be made, why wouldn't it have happened in the 1990s?
The Kurt Russell-starring effects showcase grossed over $150 million on a $40 million budget, so it doesn't make a ton of commercial sense to wait almost 30 years before setting a sequel in motion.
Not that Backdraft ever seemed especially fertile for the franchise treatment anyway.
What We Know
In March 2018, Universal confirmed that a surprise sequel was in development, with William Baldwin set to reprise his role from the original film, while Donald Sutherland co-stars and Gonzalo López-Gallego (Apollo 18) directs.
To the surprise of few, Backdraft II is going the straight-to-video route and, uh, doesn't look great. While plenty of movie properties do fine business surviving on home video, is there really anyone hankering for a bargain basement continuation of Backdraft?
If you're keen to sate your curiosity, you at least don't have long to wait, as the film hits home video platforms next month.
