12 Unexpected Movie Sequels You Didn't Know Are Happening

4. Escape Room 2

Why It's Unexpected

Escape Room absolutely seemed like one of those stunningly mediocre thrillers destined to sink without a trace at the box office and quickly end up on Netflix, but thanks to a canny early-January release date and PG-13 rating, the mere $9 million film ended up grossing an inconceivable $154.3 million worldwide.

For a totally unassuming genre film that could've come and gone without moving the needle at all, the prospect of Escape Room now becoming the next big horror franchise is shockingly real.

What We Know

Sony naturally didn't wait long to confirm development of a sequel, with director Adam Robitel set to return alongside co-writer Bragi F. Schut.

There's no word yet on whether or not the surviving characters from the first film will be returning, or if the film will go the Saw route and largely focus on a new host of victims.

Either way, the release is currently slated for April 17, 2020, and given the sequel's presumably low-budget nature, it's entirely believable that it'll be quickly shot over the summer for a fast turnaround.
