12 Unsolved Movie Mysteries That Drove You Mad
4. Was Patrick Really A Killer? - American Psycho
This adaptation of Brett Easton Ellis' infamous novel revolves around New York investment banker Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), who in addition to being insanely narcissistic is, well, insane.
When he's not crunching the numbers and schmoozing, Bateman's busy brutally butchering people who annoy him, but following a chaotically violent finale, the very end of the movie sees him leaving a confessional voicemail message for his lawyer.
But the delicious irony is that Bateman's inquiries about the voicemail the next day are laughed off, with the implication being that his murderous actions may have simply been the delusions of a mentally ill man.
Whether real or not, both endings would support the film's satirical overtones, though the surrealism of Bateman actually committing some of the murders and being unable to bring himself to justice - being a wealthy white guy and all - is just too delicious to ignore.
Director Mary Harron claims she didn't intend to convey the possibility that every murder was imagined as many have latched onto, and in the very least, Bateman did something.
