2. The Hills Have Eyes Part II
Directed by Switchblade Romance helmer Alexandre Aja, 2006’s The Hills Have Eyes remake remains one of the torture porn era’s most hardcore and reprehensibly violent mainstream releases, with its lengthy torture sequences bringing the “more is more” ethos of New French Extremity into popular American cinema.
So upping the ante for the sequel was almost impossible (particularly now that Aja grew a soul and sense of humour and was working on a Piranha reboot).
What could be done?
An action-forward sequel wherein the victims facing off against the mutants are tough mercenaries rather than random suburbanites!
It could have been a thrilling surprise—if the flick hadn’t inexplicably made its marine cast as hapless and easily dispatched as the outmatched civilians of the first film, that is.
