The Film

The first prequel to Despicable Me scratched an itch for fans of the Minions - the breakout stars of the franchise - and told the story of how they came to work for Gru. The ending of that film seemingly left little direction to go, since they met Gru, but it seems that Universal see more in that prequel timeline. Which probably has a lot to do with how well the prequel did at the box office.

Expect the same sort of nonsensical humour (and fascination with bananas and bottoms, no doubt). The kids will love it.

Evidence

Whether you agree with it or not, the Despicable Me franchise - including its Minions spin-off - is absolutely solid gold when it comes to family audiences and even a slight drop in quality for Despicable Me 3, it still hit a billion dollars.

With Minions also up there and Universal well-aware that their little yellow walking goldmines can market themselves, it won't be at all surprising for the sequel to coast up to the same level.
