With Trekkers - one of the most dedicated fan bases known to mankind - as its main critics, the Paramount Pictures Star Trek reboot was bound to be divisive from the start.

The first two films in the series – the J.J. Abrams directed Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness – though both commercially successful attracted critiques on their limp plotlines and straying too far from Star Trek canon and if reaction to the trailers for Star Trek Beyond are anything to go by, Trekkies could be just as disappointed by Paramount’s third instalment.

Co-scriptwriter and star Simon Pegg, a self-confessed Trek fan himself, has expressed his disappointment with the Star Trek Beyond trailer stating studio execs have focused on action-packed scenes in an attempt to appeal to as wide an audience as possible to the detriment of film’s true Trekkie elements. Fellow geek and Next Generation star Wil Wheaton described it as a trailer for ‘a generic science fiction action movie’.

While Star Trek Beyond might appeal to newcomers to the franchise the more devoted fans may be in for another let down. Though saying that, the early reviews have been shockingly positive.
