12 Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies That Could Be Better Than Star Wars: The Last Jedi
3. Chaos Walking
Release Date: March 1, 2019
Doug Liman proved with Edge of Tomorrow just what he's capable of on a Marvel-sized budget, and though the film wasn't a huge commercial success, it has endured as one of the most acclaimed sci-fi tentpoles of the last few years.
As such, there's little risk handing him $125 million to adapt Patrick Ness' 2008 young adult novel The Knife of Never Letting Go.
Starring Tom Holland and Star Wars' own Daisy Ridley and Mads Mikkelsen, Chaos Walking takes place in an alternate reality where an alien germ has reportedly killed all womankind and most men, with the remaining men able to hear each other's thoughts. When young Todd Hewitt (Holland) encounters a woman, Viola Eade (Ridley), he realises there's more to this world than he realised.
In Liman's hands and with such talented lead actors, not to mention a screenplay co-written by the brilliant Charlie Kaufman, Chaos Walking should transcend young adult cliches and serve up an uncommonly thoughtful sci-fi that will appeal to adults and teens alike.
