12 Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies That Could Be Better Than Star Wars: The Last Jedi

5. Captive State

Captive State John Goodman
Focus Features

Release Date: August 17

Captive State couldn't be much more different from Alita: Battle Angel. A modest $25 million sci-fi headlined by two acclaimed actors (John Goodman and Vera Farmiga) and helmed by a proven genre filmmaker in Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), this has the potential to be a cult classic sci-fi that totally sneaks up on unsuspecting audiences this summer.

Little is known about the film so far, but it takes place in Chicago a decade after an extraterrestrial force arrived on Earth and began occupying the planet, and will apparently explore both sides of the conflict.

Though its small budget means there probably won't be any big-scale set-pieces, Captive State could be an efficiently low-key piece of genre filmmaking, and given how terrific both Goodman and Varmiga have been in past sci-fi movies, it's easy to expect mighty things from them both.
