12 Worst Casting Decisions In Harry Potter Movies

1. Michael Gambon As Dumbledore

Harry Potter Casting
Warner Bros.
"He was tall, thin and very old, judging by the silver of his hair and beard, which were both long enough to tuck into his belt..His blue eyes were light, bright and sparkling behind half-moon spectacles and his nose was very long and crooked, as though it had been broken at least twice."

Controversial, yes, but filling the cloak of Dumbledore was never going to please everyone. Whereas Richard Harris' wizened old Dumbledore was seemingly perfectly, the actor's death after The Chamber of Secrets meant that the part was recast.

Now don't get me wrong, Michael Gambon is a superb actor, but is he really Dumbledore?

The looming presence of a towering Harris was replaced by the slightly shorter, and a lot grumpier "Grumbledore." Gambon had his own unique take on Rowling's character, and it was clearly a very different version of the Hogwarts headmaster. Small things seem to make sense when Gambon himself bragged that he "never felt the need" to read Rowling's books.

With his menacing scowl and screwed up face, the kindly whispers of Harris were replaced with Gambon's Shakespearean bellow. For anyone still not convinced, just look at the scene from the fourth film: "DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE?"

The original passage from the books was followed by the words “calmly,” which was definitely not the way Gambon took the scene. He was a far cry from the cool and calm book Dumbledore. For many, he will be their version of the character, but personally I think they dropped the goblet on this one!
