12 Worst Casting Decisions In Harry Potter Movies

7. Bill Nighy As Rufus Scrimgeour

Harry Potter Casting
Warner Bros.
"The Prime Minister's first, foolish thought was that Rufus Scrimgeour looked rather like an old lion. There were streaks of grey in his mane of tawny hair and his bushy eyebrows, he had keen yellowish eyes behind a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles and a certain rangy, loping grace even though he walked with a slight limp."

As the leader of the magic world, you need an imposing presence. Unfortunately Bill Nighy’s part as Rufus Scrimgeour comes across as yet another Potter "grumpy grandpa." Reading Rowling’s books and Scrimgeour sounds like a real life Kurt Russell, described as looking like a lion with an imposing stance, we were expecting more Mufasa than Davy Jones.

Nighy was originally cast in the part for Half Blood Prince, but for unknown reasons it was cut, therefore we barely get to know the part. Compare this to the books, and Scrimgeour becomes a major player around the time of Order of the Phoenix. Due to shortened screen time we don’t even scratch the surface of the Minister of Magic.

This means we never explore his relationship with the likes of Dumbledore, or his antagonistic troubles with Harry Potter. Nighy’s portrayal is nowhere near as tough and ruthless as in the book and he just fades out.

Sorry Bill, the part just slips into the realm of another celebrity cameo.
