Audition starts out nice enough: middle-aged widower Aoyama is encouraged by his teenage son to start dating again and, with the help of his film producer friend, sets up a mock movie audition (hence the title) in order to get a line-up of young, beautiful women for him to choose from. A dodgy move, but nothing we havent seen in plenty of romantic comedies. But this is not a romantic comedy and the film quickly takes a darker turn. Enchanted by one of the auditionees, a demure former ballerina named Asami, Aoyama sets about pursuing her but finds she may have been a little less than truthful about herself. Cue a vomit eating scene that will have your gag reflex in overdrive (and in the way youd originally planned, wink wink) and a climax involving a paralysis-inducing drug, Aoyamas foot and some piano wire and Netflix and chill viewing Audition does not make.
