Tom Hardy is a perfect casting choice to play Eddie Brock aka Venom, but it's depressingly tough to be optimistic about this R-rated origin story for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it's being helmed by Ruben Fleischer, who hasn't directed a good film since his 2009 debut Zombieland, it's been written by the minds behind Kangaroo Jack, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Dark Tower and Fifty Shades of Grey, and it's being conceived as the start of a Sony Marvel franchise, which could give it an unshakeable whiff of desperation throughout (ala last summer's The Mummy).

Above all else, there's the growing suspicion that Sony is going to soften the edges of Venom and make him a more likeable, charming character in order to bolster his franchise potential, when fans really just want to see the villain envisioned as the savage beast he is.

Granted, there's already a lot of healthy scepticism surrounding this production, but considering how much confidence there should be in a Tom Hardy-led Venom film, it's a shame that it just doesn't feel right.
