There are a lot of reasons to want to like this adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's 1962 fantasy novel, not least that it boasts a stacked, ethnically diverse cast including Reese Witherspoon, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Peña, Mindy Kaling, Oprah Winfrey, Zach Galifianakis and Chris Pine, but is also the first $100+ million movie to ever be directed by a black woman, with Ava DuVernay (Selma) taking the reins.

Though the marketing so far suggest a visually lavish spectacle, it also suggests a disappointingly familiar fantasy romp, with a typical "chosen one" narrative, the usual familial discord, and actors in heavy make-up looking sillier than the film seems prepared to admit.

The worst thing the film could do is take itself too seriously, so it remains to be seen whether or not DuVernay will nail the right tone, but what's been shown off to date doesn't suggest much more than a formulaic, simplistic adventure movie, which given the huge talent involved would be massively underwhelming.
