13 Actors' Favourite Movies You'd Never Expect

7. Fitzcarraldo - Eva Mendes

Beverly Hills Ninja Christian Bale
Columbia & Anchor Bay

The Film: Werner Herzog's 1982 surrealist drama about a man (Klaus Kinski) who endeavours to pull a 320-ton steam liner over a steep hill in the South-American jungle, hoping that it will eventually allow him to built an Opera House there.

Why You'd Never Expect It: Though Eva Mendes has worked with esteemed art-house director Leos Carax (Holy Motors) and even Herzog himself (Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans), she's still primarily known for her frothier film roles, and so, one mistakenly assumes that this must be where her tastes lie. Not the case.

What She Said: "[Herzog] is one of my all-time favorite filmmakers. In Fitzcarraldo, he manages to bring an opera house into a Peruvian jungle. What an amazing concept!"
