Reflecting on the casting process for Tim Burton's Batman, Sam Hamm noted, "We thought, 'Well, Willem Dafoe looks just like The Joker'". For whatever reason, the part didn't go to Dafoe despite this glowing report, but what more of an endorsement could an actor possibly need? Would It Have Worked?: Definitely. Granted, the above photoshopped image is of a relatively recent Dafoe, but even going back 20 years, his facial structure, his thin lips, his eyes: it would all conspire to make a Joker considerably creepier than what Jack Nicholson came up with. Plus, there's the benefit that it would have been easier for audiences to lose themselves in the character, given that Dafoe was not as well known as Nicholson in the late 80s, whereas Nicholson stuck out like a sore thumb the entire time (great though his portrayal was).
